What is Tumor Ovarian?

Ovarian tumor begins in the ovaries. Women have 2 ovaries, one on each side of the uterus in the pelvis. The main function of ovary is source of women’s female hormones, estrogen and progesterone. The eggs travel through the fallopian tubes to the uterus. Some of benign or tumor are never spread beyond the ovary. Women with these types of tumor can be treated by taking out either the ovary or the part of the ovary that has the tumor. Tumors in the ovary are named for the kinds of cells the tumor started from and whether the tumor is benign or cancerous. 3 main types of tumor are:

    • Epithelial Tumor

These tumors start from the cells that cover the outer surface of the ovary. Most ovarian tumor is epithelial cell tumors.

    • Germ Cell Tumor

These types of tumor start from the cell that produces the eggs.

    • Stromal Tumor

These types of tumor start from cells that hold the ovary together and make the female hormones.

What is symptom of ovarian tumor?

Women are more likely to have symptoms if the disease has spread beyond the ovaries, but even early stage ovarian tumor can cause them. The most common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling or bloating
  • A persistent lack of energy
  • Changes in bowel habits, such as constipation
  • Changes in bladder habits, including a frequent need to urinate
  • Increased abdominal girth or clothes fitting tighter around waist.
  • Loss of appetite or quickly feeling full
  • Low back pain
  • Persistent indigestion, gas or nausea
  • Pelvic discomfort or pain

What is risk factor of ovarian tumor?

A risk factor is anything that changes chance of getting a disease like tumor.Having a risk factor does not mean get the disease. Most of people get this disease may not have any risk factor. If a person with ovarian tumor has a risk factor, it is very hard to know how much that risk factor may have contributed to the tumor. There are several ovarian tumor risk factors:

    • Age

Ovarian cancer is rare in women younger than 40. Most of all ovarian tumors are found in women 63 years of age or older.

    • Androgen

Danazol is a drug that increase androgen levels, was linked to an increased risk of ovarian tumor. Androgen is a male hormone. Women who took androgens were found to have a higher risk of ovarian tumor.

    • Birth control

Women who have used oral contraceptives have a lower risk of ovarian tumor. The lower risk is seen after only 3 to 6 months of using the pill, and the risk is lower the longer the pills are used. Besides, the lower continues for many years after the pill is stopped.

    • Reproductive History

This is the lower risk of ovarian tumor if the women who have been pregnant rather than not.

    • Fertility Drugs

The risk factor of ovarian tumor will increase if fertility drug clomiphene citrate for longer than one year.

    • Family History

The risk of ovarian tumor will increase if mother, sister, or daughter has (or has had) ovarian tumor.

    • Diet

Women who followed a low-fat diet for at least 4 years showed a lower risk of ovarian tumor. Limit the amount of red meat and processes meats. Other than that, to prevent from any types of tumor and cancer needs to eat at least 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables every day.

    • Talcum Powder

The talcum powder applied directly to the genital area or on sanitary napkins may be carcinogenic to the ovaries.
